Hygia was conceived to help with the current obesity epidemic and to make healthy weight management a way of life. According to National center for health statistics, more than 65% of adults and 30% of children and adolescents are overweight or obese. The rate has doubled during the past 30 years in adults and tripled in children.
Shohre Zahedi's passion for food and nutrition which led her to pursue her studies in this field and eagerness to help people provided her with the perfect background to establish Hygia.
Her education in food science and nutrition has included a Bachelor of Science degree from University of California, Davis and Master of Science degree from California State University, Northridge.
She has good understanding of the science and technology of food. While pursuing her master degree, she has worked on developing low fat food using new ingredients. She has demonstrated expertise and innovation in development of new products.
She has been awarded the Knowles A. Ryerson Award from University of California, Davis for excellence in academics and leadership.
Her professional life has included many years of experience in the food industry, including product development, quality control and food microbiology. She has worked for companies such as Nestle Research Center, Borden Food Service and Dole Foods.
Her nutrition counseling experiences have included working in private practice as well as weight management companies. She believes that healthy weight management should be a way of life. Since each person has a different personality, lifestyle and needs, a comprehensive plan is designed specifically for each individual.
She is a member of the American Dietetic Association and holds certification in Adult, Childhood and Adolescent Weight Management from that esteemed institution.
Her teaching experience has included teaching college nutrition courses.
In the fitness arena, she holds Personal Fitness Trainer certification and Practical Yoga Instructor training.
She has also been active in the technology arena. She has comprehensive understanding of computer systems and application of computer technology. She has developed applications and designed software and databases for various companies.
In the year 2002, she was recognized as the Alumni of the Year, in recognition of outstanding service from the San Diego Career Opportunities Partners (SDCOP).
